The TFB800 unit is an innovative portable data acquisition and processing system designed to work in hostile environments, where sudden changes in temperature, variable weather conditions, humidity, rain, radio disturbance, accidental falls and impact are all possible conditions of use. The terminal is a compact, handy and lightweight portable processor. It is sized and shaped so that it is easy to handle and suitable for all applications, especially for reading gas and water meters. The portable TFB800 terminal is designed to offer the best compromise between operational autonomy and performance. The terminal offers the following technical characteristics:
• Graphic rear-lit LCD Touch-screen FSTN 240*320 Pixel (1/4 VGA) with adjustable contrast.
• Keyboard that can be customised with 42 or 36 alphanumerical keys, with rear-lighting, waterproofing and protection against dust.
• CPU Arm 720T RISC 32bit 74 MHz (equivalent in terms of performance to Intel Pentium 133 Mhz).
• SDRAM from 32 to 128 MB.
• FLASH RAM from 8 to 32 MB for saving data and programs.
• Buffered SRAM from 256 Kb to 1 Mb.
• 2 slots for interface or memory cards type Compact Flash with cover to protect them against atmospheric agents.
• Built-in Ethernet board 10BaseT (10 Mbps) with standard RJ45 connector.
• CoDec Audio and microphone for recording vocal notes and memos.
• 2 USB ports type 2.0 (Host/Slave).
• Serial Interface IrDA 1.1.
• Serial port RS232 compatible and programmable, with transfer rate of up to 115.2 Kbit/sec.
• Long life NiMh rechargeable battery pack.
• Elastic strap to facilitate carrying.
• Built-in clock Y2K compliant.
• Linux operating system.

The TFB800 terminal fits a Strong Arm RISC processor, which is equivalent in terms of performance to an Intel Pentium processor of 133 MHz, but with amazingly low energy consumptions to guarantee over 16 hours of non-stop operation. The operating system and the software application program created are optimised to be able to enable or disable all the external or internal devices fitted on the unit based on the requirements at the specific time of use. The plastic impact proof ABS structure guarantees outstanding protection against water and dust and withstands falls of up to 1.5 m.

The devices that the TFB800 unit can fit may be data saving units, standard modems, GSM/GPRS modems, Bluetooth devices, GPS units and anything else that the market offers. The size of the display takes on an important role in all data searching operations because it allows you to simultaneously view a greater quantity of information. Thanks to the touch-screen, you can also interact directly with the information displayed on the screen. The compact rechargeable and removable battery enables the TFB800 unit to run continuously and powers all the various optional peripheral units connected. The NiMH batteries mean that old batteries can be disposed of easily since they are free from hazardous compounds for the environment. The programmable energy saving functions can be used to leave the unit in stand-by mode to reduce consumptions and regain operation quite rapidly.

The reading of the meters, with simultaneous acquisition of the photograph of the meter dial, has lead to the production of a totally new recording system and specific for this type of application. The video camera is able to acquire digital pictures with the following minimum characteristics:
Minimum size: 640X480
256 levels of grey or colour, in JPG format
Low occupation of hard disc
The recording device is resistant to impact, humidity and water. It is very compact and can be used easily even in unfavourable situations. You can see the preview of the picture acquired with short taking and processing times, plus it is totally compatible with the OCR systems currently available on the market.
